We’re auctioning off beeutiful hives to raise funds and create a buzz around saving our precious little honeybee. Place a bid on your favourite or donate what you can on our Give a Little page.
Our buzzy little friends might look sweet, but honeybees play a pretty essential role in our ecosystem, with a third of our food relying on their pollination. A recent study of over 3600 registered New Zealand beekeepers show our bee population is dropping by around 10% each year, consistently for the last several years.
Un-bee-lievable, we know. Part of this is due to our once chub-bee workers running out of food, while pesky wasps are doing what they can to wipe out their fellow flyers.
We’ve enlisted the talents of generous local artists to transform our hives into masterpieces. The final honey pot for these original, unique and valuable works will go towards getting rid of our bee’s enemies, implementing Vespex solutions across Queenstown and creating a buzz amongst keepers.
Place a bid on your favourite or donate what you can on our Give a Little page. Our honeybees thank you dearly. Well, what they actually said was ‘buzz, buzz, buzz’ but you get the gist.
Hive #2: COLOURFIELDS by Olivia Wensley
"Olivia's 'Colourfields' piece shows the landscape around the Wakatipu baisin in abstract way. The landscape is depicted as an abstract patchwork of unexpected colours and textures. Olivia describes her style as expressionist and joyful, and loves using unlikely colours.
The Hive is painted with Resene acrylic to get the ultra bright colours - and for resilience outdoors."

Hi do you know how much delivery to Auckland is.? Are the hives suitable for use? aucklandfamily(311• 07:45 am, Mon, 6 May ) I estimate freight to be around the $30-50 range, I am awaiting the quote from our courier. The size is 485 x 410 x 760. Yes they can all be used as a hive, may require a wax dip or similar. lupsy(143• Monday, 6 May 2019 ) What exacting will you be spending the money on? Are you treating your own hives for varroa? Trapping for wasps around your bee yards? And your friends apiarys? Or are you creating wild bees and treating them in the wild? reelgirlsfishnz(54• 07:46 pm, Thu, 16 May ) Hello! The money will not be used for commercial gain, so no. We will be putting bait stations in private areas, as well as work with DOC for effective regions. All the information on use of funds can be found on our donation page, https://givealittle.co.nz/cause/queenstown-lakes-bee-health-booster. lupsy(143• Thursday, 16 May 2019 )
